Gift Ribbon Designs and Techniques

There are several ribbon designs that you can use to add a floral accent to your gifts, to complement that elegant wrapping paper. They can also brighten an otherwise dull wrapping paper.

Graduated Loop Bow

A graduated loop bow is a type of ribbon bow that has a variety of loop sizes overlapping together. The largest loops are around the outer edge of the bow, gradually decreasing in loop size as they get towards the center. A graduated loop bow can have four to eight loops to as many as thirty loops, depending on the size desired. The loops are evenly spread to create a round or floral shape.

Puffy or Floral Bow

A puffy bow gives a nice final addition to a great gift. It gives a "floral" effect to the gift and can be used as a substitute for flowers. It is made by creating loops that are uniform in size (usually by wrapping ribbon around your hand).

Tailored Bow

A tailored bow is a ribbon bow made by steadily reducing the size of the loops piled on one another. You can create a tailored bow using a one piece ribbon if the ribbon is double sided. However, separate loops have to be made if using a single sided ribbon. Tailored bow are perfect for accentuating books, pamphlets, thin packages, and small gift baskets.

Cross Tying Technique

Cross tying technique involves encircling the ribbon around the box, crisscrossing the ribbon at the center and tying both ends of the ribbon to create a bow. This technique involves using a length of ribbon twice the length of the box plus twice the width of the box, taking into consideration the box height and the size of the bow.

Diagonal Tying Technique

This ribbon tying technique can be used for formal gift giving occasions such as weddings, graduations, etc. Instead of crisscrossing the ribbon as in a cross tying technique, the ribbon is wrapped diagonally across the box, tying a knot at an edge and then making a bowknot. The good about this technique is that you can adjust the bow to a place of your choice by pinching the knot and moving it.
