How to Make Gift Ribbon Bows
Ribbon bows add floral elegance to any wrapped gift. They create a sensation and
compliment any well-wrapped gift. These bow making ideas and how-to are easy to
follow and will add brilliance to wrapped gifts, gift baskets, and more.
Graduated Loop Bow
A graduated loop bow is a type of ribbon bow that has a variety of loop sizes
overlapping together. The largest loops are around the outer edge of the bow,
gradually decreasing in loop size as they get towards the center. A graduated
loop bow can have four to eight loops to as many as thirty loops, depending on
the size desired. The loops are evenly spread to create a round or floral shape.
To make a graduated loop bow:
1. You need a continuous length of ribbon. Measure the desired length of the
ribbon tail and from there; create a loop by pinching the ribbon.
2. Repeat the same step to continue making more loops, gradually decreasing the
size of the loops until the bow is full and you get the desired loop density but
leaving enough ribbon for the other end of the tail.
3. To tighten and secure the loop, wrap the center of the bow with wire.
4. Fan out the loops by twisting and cut the tails in even length. You can cut
the ends in slant or in points to finish off the bow.
Puffy Bow
A puffy bow gives a nice final addition to a great gift. It gives a "floral"
effect to the gift and can be used as a substitute for flowers. It is made by
creating loops that are uniform in size (usually by wrapping ribbon around your
hand).
1. Start by creating loops of equal size. Wrap ribbons around your hand as many
times as desired. The more loops, the fuller the bow will be. To make your bow
larger, spread your fingers.
2. Fold the loops in half and cut a triangle on each of the side being careful
not to cut too close to the center.
3. Secure the ribbon at the center over notches with wire. You can also use a
small ribbon to tie the bow in the center.
4. Pull out the loops one by one, alternating sides from the inside out,
twisting each loop as you pull it from the center.
